Ground source heat pumps are vertical “wells” that extract heat from rock which then relay this energy to a ground source heat pump. Ground source heat pumps have minimal impact or disruption to the area in which they are created. Unlike other geothermal exploration which can involve drilling to depths of up to 5000 meters, ground source pump boreholes are only drilled to approximate depths of up to 150 – 600 metres, with a maximum depth of 1000 metres.
When the sun’s heat penetrates the surface of the earth, this heat is retained within the rock many metres below the ground. This energy source is constant and can be extracted using specialist drill rigs which, in the case of a closed loop system will dig to depths of up to 200 metres.
You wouldn’t usually require permission to install a ground source heat pump on your property. We will however assess each individual project to ensure we are following the appropriate guidelines and permissions should any be required.
